Turkey’s most famous tourist attractions - Troy

One of Turkey’s most famous tourist attractions, the story of Troy has had everything from Homer’s ancient yarns to the full Hollywood stylings. Yet to truly get a feel for this legendary city you need to explore its walls and take a stroll around its streets, homes and theatres.

Troy or “Truva” is one of the most famous and historically significant sites in the world. Located in modern day Turkey, the site marks the meeting place of Anatolia, the Aegean and the Balkans, making it a vitally important source of information about the historic relationships between these regions.

Imbued with several millennia of history and the subject of legend, Troy’s fame mainly derives from being the fabled location of the Trojan War. There are several ancient accounts of this conflict, mainly fiction, the most famous of which was written by Homer in The Iliad. The story goes that the Greeks besieged Troy after Helen, wife of the Menelaus, the king of Sparta, was taken by Paris of Troy. Many historians now believe that the reason for the Trojan War was a bitter commercial rivalry between the people of Troy and the Mycenaeans.

It was also Troy which was the subject of Virgil's epic poem The Aeneid, in which the Greeks laid the famous “Trojan Horse” trap for the people of Troy. The Greeks, pretending to have left Troy during the Trojan War, placed a wooden horse at the gates of the city as a purported trophy of the Trojans’ victory. In fact, Greek soldiers were hiding inside the horse and, once taken in by the Trojans, proceeded to destroy the city and claim victory. The archaeological site of Troy has an obligatory replica of a Trojan horse for visitors.

The vast ruins now found at Troy lay witness to thousands of years of history, with the oldest section dating back to the late fourth millennium BC. Over the millennia, Troy became a bustling commercial hub, particularly from 1700 BC. However, a combination of natural disasters, invasions and occupations led to the city being rebuilt numerous times. Each part of the site is numbered, correlating to a specific period of time. The famous walls of Troy, which played such an important role on the Trojan War, some of which remain, can be seen in the VII section.

It is said that Alexander the Great visited Troy in 334BC, at the start of his campaign against the Persians. The Macedonian leader is believed to have paid his respects at the Tomb of Achilles.

Troy continued to maintain its status under the Romans, especially after it was identified as the location of Homer’s Iliad in 188 BC and the city was exempt from taxes. The site has a mix of Greek and Roman monuments, many built by prominent figures such as Alexander the Great and the Roman Emperor Augustus.

Regardless of whether Troy was the actual site of the Trojan War, the archaeological site of Troy is a fascinating place for history enthusiasts and tourists alike. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Planets: what makes them good or bad by Guru Vinod Ji

Every astrological reports tell you this planet is good, strong and that planet is challenging etc.

To assess whether a planet is good for you or not is at one hand the most difficult task for an astrologer to find but on the other hand there are same straight forward principles which you can easily understand to make some assessment about a planet which will be true for most of the charts that you analyze.

However I must caution you that these simple principles are interesting but not comprehensive to make a judgment about every chart that you will encounter. A competent astrologer takes a lifetime to make this assessment and still he may be right in only 75% of the time.

However before we go to these simple principles of assessment, I should first clarify some basic hypothesis of astrology.

The connection between the planet and the Zodiac Signs:

Every Zodiac sign is associated with a planet, which is called the lord of the sign or the planet is ruling that sign. I had already mentioned this in my last article but I shall repeat this once again in this article also.

Most astrologers agree that Rahu rules Aquarius. Some Vedic astrologers consider that Rahu rules Virgo as well. Western astrologers usually do not assign any Lordship to the two lunar nodes. For them the co ruler of Aquarius is Uranus.

The manglik factor in the horoscope

Mars holds a very important planet in our horoscopes. It is the planet of action and our capacity to project emotion - its nature is that of a brave warrior, one who is also ruthless. A correct balance of Martian energy is the most desirable in all lives - but unfortunately, only a lucky few possess this dynamic balance. Mars is the planet of emotional excitability, which can become violence. Generally speaking, Venus is the planet of emotion sensitivity, which can become refinement while Mars represents the malefic side of our emotions.

On the positive side, a strong Mars is necessary to give us the energy, independence, will and self-confidence to carry out our endeavors. Without this we would have no real interest, passion or motivation to carry out anything to an end and accomplish its objective. On the negative side, the same aggression brings about competition, argument and conflict - which, if unchecked can lead to domination, violence and injury.

Mars indicates premature death; as with loss of partner, particularly so when Mars is afflicted by "Kuja Dosha". This affliction of Mars in a chart commonly makes the horoscope to be known as a Manglik horoscope. It is caused by placement of Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th house of a natal chart. There are of course conditions when this affliction of "Kuja Dosha" is reduced to some extent.

The very obvious and only means to cancellation of "Kuja Dosha" or malefic effect of a Manglik horoscope is that the person with such a horoscope marries another with a similar affliction. Recourse to divinity, especially to Lord Hanumaan is said to be effective armour against malefic effect of "Kuja Dosha".

Understanding Rahu and Ketu by Acharya Vinod Ji

This is the concluding article on the Rahu/ Ketu series which I have been sharing with our members since the beginning of this present transit of Rahu/ Ketu through Capricorn/ Cancer on 30th April, 2008. This transit will continue for next 18 months.

We had also informed you through our various communications that during the beginning of this transit there will be conjunctions between debilitated Mars and Ketu through Cancer, which is extremely inauspicious for mundane events. This combination can create war or devastating natural disaster. Fortunately till date there had been no hot active war in any part of the world but in it’s fury and in its power of destruction, the world had not escaped. The massive earthquake in China and devastating cyclone in Mayanmar has caused destructions and loss of life in proportions which are in the same scale as loss of life and destructions during the Second World War. As long as we do not get personally involved, mundane tragedy remains as an intellectual abstraction for us, and it is impossible for us to actually feel the extent of this tragedy in our daily life.

In this concluding article, I shall discuss one of the combinations in the natal chart of Rahu/Ketu, which is very complex called "Kala Sharpa" Yoga.

Many of us are familiar with this combination because of our visit to astrologers or reading astrological information in web-sites, media etc, like Kujadosha or Manglik affliction in the chart and Sade Satti. The common elements in these combinations are that these are all constituted by the participation of natural malefic planets. For example Kala Sharpa yoga is formed by Rahu/Ketu. Manglik affliction is caused by Mars. Sade Satti is caused by Saturn.

The important difference is- the first two combinations are caused by the static configuration of either Rahu/Ketu or Mars in the natal chart. Some of us may have these two combinations in our natal chart and others will not have it. Those of us who have these combinations in their chart will experience the impact throughout their lives. But Sade Satti is caused purely by transit of Saturn and its specion condition with respect to the position of natal Moon in our chart. All of us normally will experience definitely 2 Sade Sattis and those of us who lives really long will experience a third one also every 30 years in our life.

I clarified this, because many a time, a client who comes to consult us often asks me whether he has Sade satti in his chart or not.

Now let us take up what is Kala Sharpa Yoga in our chart.

The meaning of "Kala Sharpa": In Sanskrit Kala means "Time". Sharpa means "Snake" This Yoga signifies the time aspect of Rahu and Ketu, the serpent planets. As mentioned earlier Ketu represents past and Rahu represents future, so together, this represents the complete circle of time field in which we exist throughout eternity. This is why Rahu/Ketu is also known as Karmic triggering planet.

There are different views and controversies among Vedic astrologers on what exact combination in the chart constitutes “Kala Sharpa” Yoga in the chart. The most authentic view is the one which is mentioned by sage Parashar in Hora Shastra. This Yoga is formed when all the planets excluding the outer planets are hemmed between the axis formed by Rahu and Ketu in the chart. The outer planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto and we should not consider their position in the chart. This means even if there is one planet among the remaining 7 Vedic planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) is outside the axis formed by drawing a line joining the exact position of Rahu and Ketu by their degrees in the two Zodiac signs opposite to each other in the Zodiac, then Kala Sharpa yoga will not be formed. Even if that single planet is located in either of the same signs where Rahu and Ketu are located in the chart.

Meaning of Karma by Guru Vinod Ji

What is Karma? The best meaning of the word which captures its essential spirit has been given by the great saint Paramhansha Yogananda. I am quoting from his famous book ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’.

"Fate, Karma, Destiny- call it what you may- there is a law of justice which somehow but not by chance determines our race, our physical structure and some of our mental and emotional traits. The important thing to realize is that while we may not escape our own basic pattern we can work in conformity with it. That is where free will comes in. we are free to choose and discriminate to the limits of our understanding, and as we rightly exercise our power of choice, our understanding grows. Then, once having chosen, a man has to accept the consequences of his choice and go on from there.” Does it not sound very similar to Newton’s third law of motion: “To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."

The theory of Karma recognizes 3 kinds of Karma in our life. They are as follows:

“Sanchit Karma”- The good and bad Karma that we inherit from our past lives in this life.
“Praravdha Karma”- The net balance of good and bad Karma which we inherit from past lives in this life which we must experience in this life
“Kriyaman Karma”- The good and bad karma that we have earned from action in this life itself at any given point of time.

Out of these 3 Karmas, the a and c Karma types and their effects can be neutralized by present good and bad karmas in this life itself. But the net effect of Praravdha Karmas whether it is good or bad have to be experienced in this life itself. This theory of Karma does not accept that our life is totally predestined, our free will and the choices that we make at critical junctures in our life also play an equally important part. Hence it is not correct to say that whatever is supposed to happen is going to happen in our life and we are just hapless puppets dancing under the strings of our fate or destiny. If there was no choice and everything that happens in our life was predestined, then astrology or astrological predictions would have no relevance in human civilization.

The Horoscope: The position of planets in different signs and houses and the strengths of different planets and houses in our natal chart reflect the Praravdha Karma and the pre- destined events in our life. These are also called “Drirah” or Fixed Karma or fixed results in our life, which an astrologer will analyze from a person’s natal chart and can also predict when they are likely to happen by analyzing the Dasha system.

But there are another kind of Karma, which consists of “Sanchit Karma” and “Kriyaman Karma” These are called Adrirah Karma or probable Karma and they are not predetermined. Astrologer can make a forecast only by analyzing the divisional charts computed from natal charts as well as by analyzing the transit status of each planet and what relationship the transit planets are forming with the planets in the natal chart. This forecast can only talk about probable events and whether a particular planet is supporting or challenging. However the actual event in a person’s life will really be based on the choices that a person makes based on his/her free will.

How does Bhauma Dosha or Kuja Dosha affect a person?

First, although a person may have certain conditions in their chart, that make them Manglik candidates, there are various degrees of Bhauma Dosha. Some configurations indicate strong Dosha (defect), while others are less virulent and some can even be called mild. Since there are only 12 houses and presence of Mars in any 5 of them make one a Manglik, nearly 42% of the population are likely to be Mangliks!!
We have built a scoring system in our examination based on a 100-point basis to analyze the Manglik status of a Natal Chart. Factors such as conjunction of the Sun and Saturn, which affect the influence of Mars and can be responsible for marital discord, are also considered in this analysis.

Solutions of Kaal–Sarp Yoga by Guru Vinod JI

Kaal means Time in the cosmic sense and Sarp means Serpent. Kaal–Sarp, therefore, means the Serpent of Time. Many astrologers dread this as an evil yoga.

Interestingly, the ancient astrological texts, from Parashar to Varahamihir, are silent about it.

This Yoga is said to exist if all the planets are between Rahu and Ketu. When that happens in one’s birth–chart, the person experiences many ups and downs throughout life. The suffering increases during transits when the nodes come close to their natal positions. Kaal–Sarp Yoga is considered to be the main reason for a person’s downfall from a high position.

In Indian Puranic tradition, the she–demon Singhika had a mighty son whose name was Swarbhanu. He performed severe penance and Lord Brahma was pleased. When he wanted to grant him his wish, Swarbhanu wanted to have the same status in the heavens as the planets. The boon was granted.

Subsequently, the gods and the demons joined hands to churn the ocean in search of nectar. The mountain Mainak was the churning stick and Vasuki, the king of serpents, was the churning cord. A problem arose. Mainak was slipping off to the ocean floor whenever churning was started. To prevent this, Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise (His second Incarnation) and Mainak was placed on its back. The churning started and many things started coming out – but those need not attract our attention because that is truly another story. We are interested in the finale – when at last Amrit (Nectar) came up. Amrit (literally translated means ‘No–death’ makes one immortal.

Naturally, gods and demons were in a mad scramble for it and before anything could happen, Lord Vishnu, in the guise of a beautiful woman (Mohini) took it in her custody and asked gods and demons to sit in two lines, so that she could distribute Amrit to them.

The gods knew what was going on and the demons who did not, were so captivated by the enchantress that they readily agreed to do her bidding. The gods sat in a line on one side and the demons on the other side. Mohini started with the gods. The demons charmed as they were, failed to see the trick. But Swarbhanu, son of Singhika, with his huge head and body, ending in a serpent like tail, was smart enough to smell a rat. Taking no chances, he broke rank and went to sit with the gods.

Amrit was served and Swarbhanu was about to take it when Sun and Moon found out that there was an imposter among them. They alerted Vishnu who severed Swarbhanu’s head with his divine discuss (Sudarshan Chakra).

But alas! Nectar had already touched his lips and did it’s job. The discus had separated the head and the tail and both had, by the drink of the nectar, become indestructible.

Now Lord Brahma’s boon was remembered - and the head and the tail were given the status of planets and placed in the heaven. It is a kind of double and quits or rather the other way round.

How To Choose the Best Astrological Muhurat for Getting Married

Based on western astrology, this piece is written for those of you who have at least some knowledge of astrology and chart basics, as selecting a date and time for that all important wedding event requires the use of an astrological calendar or an ephemeris (a manual that provides the exact location and degree of all the planets presently, as well as in the past and future). A seasoned astrologer, who can further interpret your charts, is invaluable, but if that’s not possible, have on hand:

* Your astrological chart
* Your significant others' astrological chart
* An astrological calendar that depicts daily aspects

Firstly, the very best months to enter into matrimony are either April/May or even better, September/October. More simply, when the Sun is transiting through the sign Taurus or Libra, both of those planets being ruled by Venus, the time is right to initiate love and partnership events. A calendar must be consulted here as each year the Sun begins transiting Taurus anywhere between April 18th-22nd through May 18th-22nd, likewise, the Sun begins transiting Libra between September 18th-22nd through October 18th-22nd; each year it can be a different starting and ending date so checking the calendar is paramount! Next, check what sign the Moon is transiting for a chosen day. Again, if it's transiting Libra or Taurus (as it will do at some point each month), that is best, but it's tricky as the Moon only transits a sign for 2 1/2 days; it moves quickly onto the next sign therefore diligence is required to know its position. A waxing Moon (increasing toward the Full Moon) is considered more advantageous than a waning one (decreasing toward the New Moon) but avoid the exact New Moon (wait at least 12 hours after).

Also, pay attention to a Void-of-course Moon (meaning the Moon will not make further aspects to any planets until after it leaves the sign it is transiting) as anything initiated during a Void Moon rarely brings the desired result. An astrological calendar will indicate any Void Moons for a given day (you will see a symbol resembling the Moon and "V/C" beside it) as well as the time it goes Void and when it enters the next sign.

The previous step mentioned "aspects". These are angles the planets make to each other that are determined to be deleterious or beneficial. Again, on the astrological calendar, you will see symbols such as a square, meaning that the Sun, Moon or planets are 90 degrees from each other and that is probably the worst aspect for a ceremony. Look instead for small triangle symbols that represent 120 degrees (also known as a "trine" aspect; these are very good).

Avoid setting a date for when the Moon is transiting Scorpio or Capricorn. With Scorpio, there will tend to be power issues and secrets between the two people. With Capricorn, it will be more like a business arrangement than a marriage.

Regarding Step 3: A further note on and example of Void Moons: They are not beneficial for shopping excursions as you'll rarely be satisfied with your purchases however, it is good if you are opting for nothing to occur, such as mailing your tax return so that it won't be audited. It's considered a spiritual time to step back, reflect, and finish old business rather than initiating decisive new action.

There’s much more to know with such a huge subject as astrological compatibility and I've just scratched the surface. Ideally, you can consult an astrologer who will examine not only what's going on in the sky that day but will combine your charts (called “synastry”) for even more precision in determining your future life together.

Astrology dates back from the origin of man. The word Astrology is derived from two Greek words Astra (Stars) and Logos (Study). So, Astrology is the study of Stars. Astrology is Astronomy brought to earth and applied to the affairs of men.
